from Los Angeles Harbor on 4 July 1944 aboard the SS Fairland.\u00a0 The ship arrived in Hawaii on 11 July.\u00a0 On 15 July the ship departed Hawaii and continued to Eniwetok where it arrived on 24 July.\u00a0 It was only as the ship left Eniwetok that the men were informed that their destination was Saipan.\u00a0 A betting pool formed with the men guessing on the hour that the ship would drop
